Surface-decking quantity planning
Deck Calculator
Estimate deck surface area and explicit waste, then optionally convert the adjusted area into area-equivalent decking linear length and whole stock boards from your actual installed coverage and stock length.
Estimate decking needed
Measure deck surface → add explicit waste → optionally convert adjusted area to area-equivalent linear decking and whole stock boards.
Surface decking quantity without structural guesswork
How the Deck Calculator works
ProjectFigures measures the deck surface you intend to cover, applies one explicit waste / extra allowance, then optionally converts adjusted area to area-equivalent decking linear footage and whole stock boards using actual installed coverage information you supply.
How much decking do I need?
Start with the net deck surface area that will receive decking. Add only the waste or extra allowance you choose for your product, cuts and layout. If you know the actual installed coverage width, Deck Calculator can convert that adjusted area into area-equivalent linear decking.
Deck square footage and rectangular sections
A rectangular deck surface uses length × width. For multiple platforms, add separate rectangles. An L-shaped or stepped surface can be represented by non-overlapping rectangles and summed without introducing polygon or drawing tools.
Measured openings and exclusions
A section can subtract one measured total deck-free area when needed, such as a deliberately open planter or tree area. ProjectFigures does not invent standard post, tree or planter sizes, and an exclusion cannot exceed its source rectangle.
Known net deck area
If you already know the net surface area, use Known Net Area mode. That value is treated as already net of intentional exclusions and before waste / extra, so exclusions are not subtracted a second time.
Actual board width vs nominal board size
Lumber and manufactured decking can be marketed with a nominal/common size that differs from the actual profile width. When using face-width planning, enter the real face/profile width from the product information or a reliable measurement rather than assuming the marketing label is the installed coverage.
Board gaps are explicit
Deck products and fastening systems do not share one universal side-to-side gap. ProjectFigures therefore supplies no hidden gap. In Actual Face Width + Gap mode, enter the intended side-to-side gap explicitly. Zero is accepted only when you intentionally enter zero based on the real project/product guidance.
Installed coverage pitch
With face-width planning, installed coverage pitch is actual face width + intended side gap. If reliable product documentation gives an installed coverage width directly, use the Stated Installed Coverage method instead. Inactive method fields do not participate.
Decking linear feet or metres
Required decking linear length is the adjusted deck area divided by installed coverage pitch. This is an area-equivalent material quantity. It does not decide which direction boards run, where joints occur or how cuts are reused.
Area-equivalent whole stock boards
If you provide one actual stock-board length, ProjectFigures divides the required area-equivalent linear length by that stock length and rounds safely to whole boards. This is deliberately labeled an area-equivalent whole-stock-board estimate—not a guaranteed physical cut or purchase layout.
Why physical layout can need more material
Board orientation, diagonal installations, picture frames, breaker boards, butt joints, stagger rules, multiple available lengths and offcut reuse can all change physical board purchasing. V1 does not pretend to optimize those choices. Adjust the one explicit waste / extra field using appropriate real-world guidance.
Waste / extra decking
ProjectFigures starts at 0% so it does not silently impose one manufacturer's or retailer's waste assumption. Choose a visible percentage from 0% through 100%. The allowance is applied once and no hidden diagonal, layout or material multiplier is added.
Wood, composite and PVC decking
Pressure-treated wood, cedar/redwood-type boards, composite and PVC can share the transparent surface/coverage math when truthful actual coverage inputs are supplied. Material type does not make V1 change gaps, waste, stock lengths, fasteners or structural spans automatically.
Framing and structural design are outside this calculator
Deck V1 does not calculate joists, beams, posts, footings, ledgers, blocking, structural connectors, spans, loads or permit/code compliance. Use applicable local requirements, manufacturer documentation and qualified structural guidance for those decisions.
Fascia, picture frames and skirting
Perimeter fascia, picture-frame borders, breaker boards and skirting use different linear and layout geometry. They are not silently added to the surface-decking result.
Railings and guards
Railing systems depend on perimeter segments, openings, stairs, posts, system-specific rail or panel lengths and safety requirements. Deck V1 does not estimate guard height, post spacing, balusters, panels or rail hardware.
Deck stairs
Stair quantity and design introduce tread/riser materials plus rise, run, stringer and handrail/guard requirements. Those are not part of the surface-decking quantity engine.
Fasteners, clips and screws
Hidden fasteners and exposed screw requirements are product/profile/system-specific. ProjectFigures does not invent a universal clips-per-board or screws-per-square-foot rate.
US and metric units
Project geometry supports US customary and metric units, while narrow board and gap dimensions can be entered in inches or millimetres. Valid physical values are stored canonically so repeated unit switching does not compound rounded display conversions.
Worked US example
A 12 ft × 10 ft deck has 120 ft² of base area. At 0% waste, an actual 5.5 in board face plus an explicitly entered 1/8 in side gap gives a 5.625 in (0.46875 ft) coverage pitch. 120 ÷ 0.46875 = 256 linear ft of area-equivalent decking. With one 12 ft stock length, 256 ÷ 12 = 21.33…, so the area-equivalent whole-stock-board estimate is 22. The purchased linear length is 264 ft. This example does not claim that 22 boards create an optimized physical layout.
Worked metric example
A 4 m × 3 m deck has 12 m² of base area. At 0% waste, an actual 140 mm face plus an explicitly entered 4 mm side gap gives a 144 mm coverage pitch. Required area-equivalent decking is 12 ÷ 0.144 = 83.33… m. With one 4.8 m stock length, the area-equivalent estimate is 18 whole stock boards.
Common deck-material estimating mistakes
- Treating a nominal/common board label as the actual installed width.
- Assuming every decking product uses the same side gap.
- Assuming one waste percentage is universally correct.
- Calling an area-equivalent board estimate an optimized physical cut plan.
- Ignoring real available stock lengths.
- Assuming all offcuts can be reused.
- Applying the same physical board count to diagonal or picture-frame layouts.
- Mixing fascia, railings, stairs or structural framing into surface-decking math.
- Inventing universal fastener or bundle rates.
- Subtracting an opening twice or entering overlapping rectangular sections.
- Treating a quantity calculator as structural or code approval.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator tell me how many deck boards to buy exactly?
It can provide an area-equivalent whole-stock-board estimate when you supply one stock length. It is not a course, cut, joint or offcut optimizer.
What board width should I enter?
Enter the actual face/profile width when using Face Width + Gap mode, not an assumed nominal marketing width.
What gap should I use?
ProjectFigures supplies no universal gap default. Use the value appropriate to your actual product/project guidance.
Can I calculate an L-shaped deck?
Yes. Split the surface into non-overlapping rectangles and add each section.
Does it calculate joists, beams or footings?
No. Deck V1 is surface-decking quantity planning only, not structural deck design.
Does it calculate railings, stairs or fasteners?
No. Those depend on separate geometry, product systems and safety/structural rules.
Can I enter board width and gaps in millimetres?
Yes. Length fields support ft, in, m, cm and mm where applicable.
